about

Portland, Oregon is home to, among other things, a great tango community and great musicians. In March of 2011 Alex Krebs brought some of the musicians that he has worked with over the years to record an album of tangos for dancing. Using some of his own arrangements and some of those of jazz pianist Andrew Oliver, the album was recorded in a studio not far from Alex Krebs' all-tango studio, Tango Berretin. While Alex was mixing down this CD he got a surprise call from a friend of his, flamenco singer Vicente 'El Cartucho' Griego. Vicente happened to be in town and the two wanted to catch up. The mixing session quickly turned into a recording session and the result was an artistic collaboration that was originally conceived four years prior: Vicente's incredible flamenco singing over track 16, 'No te apures cara blanca.' His percussionist friend Enrique 'El Peru' Chavez, was also in town and we overdubbed him playing cajon and triangle on 'Ella Es Asi' -- bringing back the percussive sound of what may have been the earliest roots of tango.
